The Town of Plymouth, New Hampshire is located at the merge of the Pemigewasset and Baker rivers. Considered a New England landmark, Plymouth is part of Grafton County, New Hampshire and is nestled between the picturesque White Mountains and Lakes Region. A small town with approximately 6,000 residents, Plymouth spans 28.7 square miles of which 28.4 square miles is land and the remaining 0.3 square miles of it is water. The Town is also home to Plymouth State University where my wife instructed public finance classes to NEMCI (New England Municipal Clerks Institute) students, and the reason, on this occasion, for our visit to scenic New Hampshire.
Plymouth was voted as one of "50 next great adventure towns", by National Geographic's Adventure Magazine. Historical structures are plentiful in Plymouth starting with the Town Hall building, which was built in 1889 and originally built as the Grafton County Courthouse, to the Plymouth State University that opened on March 15, 1871 as the New Hampshire State Normal School that trained teachers for the rigors of public school service at the time. In 1939, the Normal School evolved into the esteemed Plymouth Teachers College. After many changes, a unified system of public New Hampshire colleges and universities was formed, and PTC became Plymouth State College, until its expansion in 2003 to Plymouth State University.
As is usually the case when we visit a new locality, a quick stop at the local PD is warranted for a few photos of their patrol vehicles and command center. The Town of Plymouth's ten-man police department is located approximately 1-1/2 miles north of the town's center at 334 Main Street. The Plymouth State University Police Department is located on campus at 2 High Street and employs ten full time officers and four part time officers. The two departments work cooperatively to patrol both on and off campus and share the Town’s police duties, including back up and mutual assistance when the need arises.
Our visit to Plymouth, New Hampshire was fun. The people we encountered there were friendly and very hospitable. The next few pages you will view on Plymouth, will give you a small glimpse of what the town has to offer. I look forward to visiting there again soon.
